Honest comparison
MacWhisper alternative — for dictation, not file transcription
This page is for people weighing MacWhisper against SuperDictate — or who bought MacWhisper and realized what they actually wanted was to talk into every app, not transcribe files. The verdict up front: MacWhisper is the better file-transcription tool. SuperDictate is the better dictation tool, and the only one of the two on Windows. Plenty of people own both.
The short version
Different tools for different jobs
MacWhisper, by indie developer Jordi Bruin, is a transcription studio for the Mac. You drag in audio or video files, auto-record Zoom, Teams, Webex, or Discord calls, and get transcripts, .srt/.vtt subtitles, speaker labels, and AI summaries. It is genuinely excellent at this — over 450,000 downloads and a 4.5/5 rating from more than 2,200 Gumroad reviews (per its Gumroad page, June 2026). It's also local by default; the developer's own words are "no data leaves your machine." And Pro is a €64 one-time license (about $70). We are not going to pretend we beat MacWhisper on privacy or on pricing model. We don't.
SuperDictate does one job MacWhisper treats as a footnote: live, system-wide dictation. Hold a hotkey and speak, and text appears where your cursor is — email, Slack, a code editor, a browser form — on macOS 13+ and Windows 10/11, with one $79 license covering both machines. Your audio never leaves your computer. It works in airplane mode. If your question is "which app turns my voice into transcripts of recordings," buy MacWhisper. If it's "which app lets me write everything by voice," keep reading.
Side by side
SuperDictate vs MacWhisper, by use case
| SuperDictate | MacWhisper | |
|---|---|---|
| Primary use case | System-wide dictation: speak, and text is typed into whatever app your cursor is in. | File and meeting transcription: drop in audio/video, auto-record calls, get transcripts, subtitles, speaker labels, summaries. Best-in-class at this. |
| Dictation into any app | The core product, on Mac and Windows. Every feature works on the free tier. | One feature among ~60: a hotkey inserts text at your cursor after you finish speaking. The most accurate models are Pro-only; the Mac App Store build has no dictation at all (as of June 2026). |
| Platforms | macOS 13+ and Windows 10/11. One license covers your Mac and your Windows PC. | Mac only — no Windows version. Current builds require macOS 14+ (as of June 2026); the vendor recommends more than 8GB RAM for larger models, and some Pro features need Apple Silicon. |
| Price | $79 once — lifetime, every feature, both platforms. Free: 15 minutes of dictation every month, no credit card. | Free tier with smaller models; Pro is €64 one-time (~$70; €59 with a June 2026 promo), one Mac. The App Store version is a subscription: $6.99/mo, $29.99/yr, or $99.99 lifetime. |
| Where audio is processed | 100% on your device, never uploaded. Works in airplane mode. Optional AI polish is text-only, off by default, via local Ollama or your own API key. | Also local by default — credit where due: "no data leaves your machine." Pro adds optional cloud transcription via OpenAI, ElevenLabs, Deepgram, or Groq. |
| Speech engine | The speech model runs on your device. | OpenAI Whisper running locally (built on whisper.cpp), plus NVIDIA Parakeet for Pro users on M-series Macs. |
| Guarantee | 30-day money-back, no questions asked. | 7-day refund, conditional on telling the developer what could be improved. |

The fine print
MacWhisper's dictation, up close
MacWhisper does have system-wide dictation — press a hotkey in push-to-talk or toggle mode, speak, and the text is inserted at your cursor in any app. If you already own Pro and dictate occasionally, it may be enough. But it's one bullet in a feature list of roughly sixty items, and the details show where the priorities are. As of June 2026: the flow is record-then-insert, so your words appear after you release the key rather than as you speak; the free version is limited to smaller, less accurate models, with the best models and the fast Parakeet engine behind Pro (Parakeet additionally requires an M-series Mac); and automatic cleanup of dictated text requires Pro plus a separately configured AI service, such as an OpenAI API key with billing enabled.
Two more things catch buyers out. The Mac App Store version — sold as "Whisper Transcription," on a subscription — has no dictation feature at all, per the developer's own support docs. And there is no Windows version, so if you split your day between a Mac and a PC, MacWhisper only covers half of it. SuperDictate's free tier includes every feature, so you can test real dictation on both machines before paying anything. Honest advice: many people should own both
If you transcribe interviews, podcasts, or meeting recordings and you want to dictate everywhere, the combined cost is about $150 once — MacWhisper Pro at roughly $70 plus SuperDictate at $79 — and both are yours for life. That's around one year of a single cloud dictation subscription at $12–15 a month (see our Wispr Flow comparison), and neither app sends your audio anywhere. If you only do one of the two jobs, buy only that tool. And if you're comparing dictation-first Mac apps instead, our Superwhisper comparison is the more relevant page. Either way, SuperDictate carries a 30-day money-back guarantee, so the decision is reversible.

Questions
MacWhisper vs SuperDictate — common questions
Is MacWhisper a dictation app?
Primarily, no. MacWhisper is a transcription app — you drop in audio or video files (or record meetings) and get transcripts, subtitles, and summaries. It does include a system-wide dictation feature: press a hotkey, speak, and the text is inserted where your cursor is. But as of June 2026 it transcribes after you stop speaking, the most accurate models require Pro, and the Mac App Store version has no dictation at all. SuperDictate is built the other way around: dictation into every app is the whole product.
Does MacWhisper work on Windows?
No. MacWhisper is Mac-only (current builds require macOS 14 or later, as of June 2026), with a separate iPhone and iPad app. There is no Windows version. One SuperDictate license covers both your Mac and your Windows PC.
How much does MacWhisper cost in 2026?
The free version costs nothing and includes file transcription plus dictation with smaller models. MacWhisper Pro is a €64 one-time license on Gumroad — roughly $70, with a June 2026 promotion bringing it to €59 — and it covers one Mac. The separate Mac App Store app from the same developer, Whisper Transcription, is subscription-priced at $6.99 a month, $29.99 a year, or $99.99 lifetime as of June 2026, and has no dictation feature. SuperDictate is $79 one-time and covers Mac and Windows.
Is MacWhisper private? Does it upload my audio?
MacWhisper is local by default — the developer states that all transcription is done on your device and no data leaves your machine. Pro users can optionally enable cloud transcription via OpenAI, ElevenLabs, Deepgram, or Groq. SuperDictate is also fully local: your audio never leaves your computer, and it works in airplane mode.
What speech engine does MacWhisper use?
MacWhisper runs OpenAI's Whisper locally (built on whisper.cpp), and Pro adds NVIDIA Parakeet on Apple Silicon Macs for faster transcription. SuperDictate's speech model also runs entirely on your device.
Should I buy MacWhisper or SuperDictate?
Both, honestly, if you do both jobs. If you transcribe files — podcasts, interviews, meeting recordings, subtitles — MacWhisper is excellent and we won't pretend otherwise. If you want to talk and have text appear in whatever app you're working in, on Mac and Windows, that's what SuperDictate is for. Free to try — 15 minutes every month. No credit card.
