Honest comparison

A Wispr Flow alternative you pay for once — and that works offline

This page is for Wispr Flow users, and people considering it, who like the product but not the subscription — or who aren't comfortable with every sentence they dictate being processed on someone else's servers. The short verdict: Wispr Flow is the more polished product, especially on mobile. SuperDictate is the one you buy once, that works in airplane mode.

The short version

Two structural differences, not ten small ones

Wispr Flow is the best-funded dictation app on the market — $81M raised, apps on Mac, Windows, iPhone, and Android, and auto-formatting that users genuinely praise. If this page told you it was bad software, you should close the tab. It isn't. But it is built on two decisions you can't configure your way out of.

First, it's subscription-only: $15/month billed monthly, or $12/month billed annually — $144 a year, every year, with no lifetime option (verified July 2026 on their pricing page). Second, it's cloud-only. Their own data-controls page says it plainly: "Transcription always happens in the cloud." SuperDictate inverts both decisions. Pay $79 once, own it forever — one license covers your Mac and your Windows PC. And the speech model runs on your device, so your audio never leaves your computer.

The subscription math

Wispr Flow Pro on annual billing: $144 after year one. $288 after year two. $432 after year three. On monthly billing: $180, $360, $540. SuperDictate: $79, total — covering both your Mac and your Windows PC. You break even before month seven on their cheapest plan, and every month after that is money you didn't spend. No discount games: $79 is the price, with a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Where your voice goes

"Transcription always happens in the cloud"

That quote isn't our characterization — it's from Wispr Flow's own data-controls page, and credit to them for being upfront about it. Every sentence you dictate is recorded and sent to their servers for transcription. Two things follow. One: no internet, no dictation — flights, trains, VPN-locked networks, flaky hotel Wi-Fi. Two: by default for individual accounts, your dictation data "may be used to evaluate, train and improve Flow's features and AI models." A zero-retention Privacy Mode exists, but you have to switch it on yourself; it's enforced automatically only on their Enterprise tier. Their Context Awareness feature also sends text near your cursor and app metadata to their servers while you dictate (it can be disabled in settings).

Here's a test that takes ten seconds: put your laptop in airplane mode and try to dictate a sentence — with any cloud tool. With SuperDictate it just types, because the speech model runs on your device and the audio never goes anywhere. The optional AI polish step is text-only, off by default, and runs through local Ollama or your own API key. If you're a lawyer, a doctor, or a developer working under NDA, that's the whole argument in one paragraph.

Credit where due

What Wispr Flow genuinely does better

Its AI auto-editing is the best in the category: filler words removed, punctuation handled, rambling speech restructured into clean lists, with tone that adapts per app — casual in Slack, formal in email. The personal dictionary learns your vocabulary automatically, snippets save repeated phrases, and it handles 100+ languages with auto-detection. And it has real iPhone and Android apps. SuperDictate has no mobile app, and our formatting is deliberately more conservative. If hands-off polish on every platform is what you're buying, Wispr Flow earns its reputation.

Who should stick with Wispr Flow

Stay if: you need dictation on your iPhone or Android; you want maximum AI auto-formatting and are comfortable with cloud processing plus a subscription; or your company needs the Enterprise tier's SOC 2 / HIPAA compliance with Privacy Mode enforced org-wide. Those are real reasons, and this page won't pretend otherwise. If you're a Mac user weighing local-first tools instead, our superwhisper comparison is the more useful read.

Questions

Wispr Flow alternative — common questions

Does Wispr Flow work offline?

No. Wispr Flow's own data-controls page states that 'transcription always happens in the cloud', so it needs an internet connection and cannot dictate in airplane mode. If your connection drops mid-dictation, audio is saved and transcribed when you reconnect. SuperDictate processes audio 100% on your device and works in airplane mode.

How much does Wispr Flow cost?

As of July 2026, Wispr Flow Pro is $15 per month billed monthly, or $12 per month billed annually ($144 per year). There is no lifetime option, so three years costs $432 on the cheapest plan. SuperDictate is $79 one-time: pay $79 once, own it forever, and one license covers your Mac and your Windows PC.

Is Wispr Flow free?

There is a free Basic plan: as of July 2026, 2,000 words per week on Mac or Windows and 1,000 words per week on iPhone, plus a 14-day Pro trial with no credit card. SuperDictate's free tier is 15 minutes of dictation per calendar month with every feature included, no credit card.

Does Wispr Flow train AI models on my dictation?

By default for individual accounts, it may. Wispr's data-controls page says dictation data 'may be used to evaluate, train and improve Flow's features and AI models' unless you manually enable Privacy Mode. With SuperDictate, your audio never leaves your computer, so there is nothing on a server to train on.

What is Wispr Flow genuinely better at?

Honest answer: mobile and formatting. Wispr Flow has iPhone and Android apps, while SuperDictate runs on macOS 13+ and Windows 10/11 only. Its AI auto-edits, per-app tone matching, and auto-learning dictionary are polished and widely praised. If you want dictation on your phone and are comfortable with cloud processing and a subscription, it is a capable product.

Can I use one SuperDictate license on both Mac and Windows?

Yes. $79 buys one lifetime license that covers both platforms: activate it on your Mac and on your Windows PC. There is no subscription and no tiers, every feature is included, and it is backed by a 30-day money-back guarantee.

Cancel the subscription, not the dictation.
